Metatarsalgia
Metatarsalgia is a common term for any soreness at the ball of foot. This soreness is usually felt on the bottom (plantar) surface of the ball of foot, but certain sensations can sometimes be felt directly into the toes. This can be in the form of pain, heat, tingling, and/or numbness. It is usually due to nerve irritation or excess force being applied to the area.
The cause for this irritation is usually 1 of 3 reasons. 1) The metatarsal arch needs to be supported, 2) the fat pad under the ball of foot is too thin, and/or 3) footwear is applying stress to the area, i.e. high heels and/or shoes that come to a point.
Treatments:
Orthotics can be helpful with these symptoms by applying metatarsal support and additional cushioning to the ball of foot. Sometimes gait plates or rocker sole shoes modifications need to be considered.
